WORKSHOP ON SYSTEM OF RICE INTENSIFICATION (SRI)

PHNOM PENH: On 19 May 2011, Dr. Yang Saing Koma CEDAC President facilitated a one-day Workshop on System of Rice Intensification (SRI) in CEDAC Head Office with the participation of approximately 40 staff who come from different target provinces of CEDAC in Cambodia.

The participants presented their activities and results have been achieved in relation to the promotion of SRI in 2010 and their action plan for promoting and experimenting SRI in the coming wet season of 2011. Furthermore, Root Intensification was raised for discussion in detail as it is very important factor to improve rice growth and yield. Methodologically, group works, plenary presentation and discussion were employed during the workshop in order to ensure an active participation from the participants.

At the end of the day, the participants got more clear understanding about the principles and each important technique of SRI especially the participant understood the reasons why we apply each SRI technique. Moreover, the different types of SRI experimentation were determined by the participants. Last but not least, as SRI is a combination of many best practices, we suggest farmers to apply at least 3 important techniques below:

  1. Transplanting healthy seedling
  2. Shallow root transplanting
  3. Transplanting only one stem per clump
