CEDAC Organized Commune Forums in Siem Reap Province

SIEM REAP: On 10 and 13 June 2011 a CEDAC’s project titled “Promoting climate resilient livelihoods for Small-Scale Farmers in Most Vulnerable Dry Land Areas in Siem Reap and Kampong Cham Provinces” organized two commune forums in Tasome and Donpeng communes, Angkor Chum district, Siem Reap province. The objectives of the forum were to present the project results from January to June 2011, and to improve the partnership and cooperation among CBOs, citizens and local authorities. It is important to notice that the forum tried to identify priority problems and needs of the villagers in communities as well as promising solutions to address those problems. 125 participants (32 women) participated in the forums, the participants consisted of government line agencies (Education district, agriculture district, women and child focal point at district level), local authorities (Commune chief, village chief and commune policemen), and Community representatives (including youth, women, farmer, and primary school principal).

The main agenda of the forums are shown below:

– Presentation on the project profile, project’s results and its activity plan

– Achievement of the commune councils in the first semester from January to June 2011

– Review the ecological System of Rice Intensification (SRI) by director of the district agriculture office
– Group discussion on climate change, food Security and environment

As a result, the participants not only knew the project’s activities and its achievements, but also the results accomplished by the commune councils from January to June 2011. On the other hand, the participant could identify climate risks, food security and environmental issues in their respective communities as well as planned for implementing the solutions. Last but not least, the participants especially the commune chief strongly satisfied to this forum and they promised to work closely with the project in order to improve the living condition of the people in their communes.

It is important to notice that with supporting fund provided by the European Union (EU), CEDAC in cooperation with PLAN International and PLAN Cambodia to implement the project mentioned above in Siem Reap and Kampong Cham Provinces.
