International training course on PM&E in Ethiopia

24 August – 4 September 2010: Mr. YIM Sok Sophors Program Officer of CEDAC and Miss. SAY Sopheaktra Secretariat of Prolinnova Cambodia participated in an international training course on Participatory Monitoring and Evaluation (PM&E) for Prolinnova Partners at CRDA (Christian Relief and Development Association), in Ethiopia- Africa. The training was organized by ETC Foundation, IIRR and Prolinnova. The training encompassed two main components: general training on M&E for projects and networks and adapting and improving the current M&E system together with the participants. In total, 23 participants from 13 countries including Cambodia, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Mozambique, Nepal, Nigeria, South Africa, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, Philippines and Netherland. Mr. Julian Francis GONSALVES, Mr. Willem Adrianus HONKOOP, Ms. Marissa Bernal ESPINELI, and Ms. Mariana WONGTSCHOWSKI are the co-trainer of the training. The training course mainly focused on concept of Participatory Monitoring and Evaluation (PM&E), facilitating PM&E in a network environment, alternative tools for PM&E, learning netowrk and community of practice, sharing best practices from Kenya and South Africa, sharing experieinces on Fundraising, timeline of Prolinnova since its beginning in 2002 till 2010, and action plan of each partner at the country program level.

Key training methodologies were brainstorming, plenary discussion, focus group discussion, plenary presentation and field visit. It is to notice that a field visit was conducted in Ambo district which is located about 120 kilometers from Addis Ababa the capital city of Ethiopia. During the visit, the trainees interveiwed Fund Management Committee at district level, Grantees who received fund from LISF to conduct agricultural experimentation and Non-Grantees as well as the local innovators.

The participants have gained in-depth understanding on the concept PM&E and many other relevant topics abovementioned especially they knew how to improve their M&E framework at the Country Programme as well as take it into action. In addtion, the participants are sure in mind about the future strategies to continue Prolinnova’s activities. After the training, M&E focal point of each country partner will conduct an impact asessment for Prolinnova programme in their respective countries.

    I found that PM&E is very important for M&E process and results for all projects because it will provide a secret information from community and staffs. On the other hand, i impressed on the methodogies for the training which you have menetioned the text. I could refresh my brain from your note on the methodologies for training session.
